The strength of habit: why it’s difficult to overcome harmful tendencies

We call a series of automatic, repeatedly performed actions «habits.» They can be useful, neutral, or harmful. But all habits share one common trait—they are hard to break. This is especially true for bad habits (or harmful tendencies), which negatively impact a person’s health and social life.
What kinds of bad habits exist?
There are a vast number of bad habits. They can be divided into two broad categories:
The first group consists of actions aimed at unconsciously satisfying inner needs. Their roots trace back to early childhood. However, an intense craving and the urge to fulfill it may emerge in adulthood under severe stress. These are the habits that evolve into pathological addictions. They include:
- alcoholism, drug addiction, tobacco smoking, substance abuse;
- compulsive shopping (shopaholism);
- gambling (gaming addiction);
- overeating (food addiction);
- mindless internet browsing (computer addiction); and others.
The second group includes unconscious actions associated with neurotic disorders. They originate from the depths of the psyche as well. Such compulsive actions are often perceived as personality traits. Some are even positive habits: handwashing, teeth brushing, etc. However, their excessive use negatively impacts health. These include:
- swearing and using filler words;
- nail-biting, chewing on pens/pencils, skin-picking;
- twirling hair around a finger;
- rocking on a chair;
- leg shaking/jiggling;
- manic, excessively repetitive actions: cleaning ears and nose, washing hands/face/body; etc.
Why do bad habits emerge?
- Bad habits serve as a tool for filling an inner void or helping to reduce anxiety. But this provides only temporary relief. Chemical substances or shopping alleviate anxiety, yet often lead to persistent addiction and adversely affect health and financial well-being. This, in turn, intensifies feelings of unease, compelling a person to cope with it in the usual way. Thus, one becomes trapped in a vicious cycle.
- Bad habits are easily accessible. They require little effort to establish. With their «help,» a person attempts to quickly and effortlessly ease their emotional state. The physical discomfort, pain, or financial decline caused by these means (methods) becomes far less significant than the inner sense of peace and satisfaction.
- Social environment plays a crucial role in forming bad habits. This is especially evident among teenagers. However, even in adulthood, imitating idols or influential figures in one’s circle can push a person to replicate negative behavior.
How to get rid of bad habits?
Sometimes, overcoming a bad habit on your own can be relatively easy through the realization that it’s no longer necessary. Through willpower and self-control, a person can successfully abandon actions that harm their health or social standing. However, unfortunately, this doesn’t always work out.
The power of habit lies in its illusory assistance. Like fever-reducing medication, they temporarily relieve symptoms but cannot help solve the underlying problem. If you can’t overcome these weaknesses on your own, it’s necessary to seek professional help.
Psychologists and psychotherapists successfully help people break bad habits. A psychologist’s task is to teach a person to independently cope with inner turmoil without resorting to destructive external aids. Recognizing one’s own inner resources and adjusting personal characteristics help overcome the power of habit.
To relieve tension and anxiety, it’s also beneficial to supplement doctor’s prescriptions with Peptides products:
- «Cerluten» and «Pinealon» will support brain tissue as they accelerate the formation of new neural connections.
- «Ventfort» and «Vesugen» will restore microcirculation and alleviate cerebral hypoxia.
- Revilab SL02 and Revilab ML03 - complex preparations combining both of the above effects.
- Additionally, «Felicita» and «Temero Genero» — non-peptide bioregulators normalizing neurotransmitter metabolism and reduce overall anxiety levels.
