The liver performs many vital functions, including those that directly affect the health of the joints. One of them is detoxification. The capillary bed in the organ itself is surrounded by liver cells, hepatocytes, which play the role of a sieve that filters both nutrients and toxic substances from the blood. Hepatocytes perform the function of neutralization - detoxification. Together with nutrients, through diffusion, toxic products of their own metabolism and foreign substances (xenobiotics) enter the body from the air, food and through the skin. The spongy structure of cartilage, devoid of its own capillary network, creates favorable conditions for the deposition of toxic molecules of xenobiotics (substances foreign to the body) and incompletely oxidized metabolic products, so various intoxications have a particularly detrimental effect on cartilage tissue.

Like any other, cartilage tissue consists of cells and intercellular substance. Cartilage tissue cells are represented by chondroblasts, from which mature chondrocytes subsequently differentiate. The structure of the intercellular matrix of cartilage is a mesh cellular structure with coarse collagen fibers (in some tissues, elastin) for strength and the main substance: glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans. Glycosaminoglycans are represented by chondroitin and glucosamine. They pass between the fibers and give the structure elasticity and shock-absorbing properties by retaining water in the fabric. The extracellular matrix is ​​structured and clearly organized.

A feature of cartilage nutrition is that the tissue itself is devoid of a network of blood capillaries and therefore it is fed indirectly in two ways: from the periosteum (a thin plate between bone and cartilage) and through the joint capsule, where oxygen and nutrients are dissolved in the synovial fluid. Normally, this is enough, but this feature explains why cartilage tissue suffers from any vascular pathologies. Metabolism in the tissue is fast, because the joints are under a lot of stress. Any disruptions of the peripheral blood flow lead to pathological changes in cartilage tissue.
